[Update: This guide is now out of date. In response to negative feedback with regards to moving servers, Starry Studios has pushed out the ability to have multiple characters across a variety of servers. Speaking about the issue, the developer stated “Our initial decision to close multiple-character creation was due to the imperfect experience of playing with multiple characters. We had originally intended to update it after perfecting the multi-character play function by August 1, but unfortunately, it led to a poor gaming experience.”
With that said, you still can’t delete an existing character. You can instead click on the server name on the title screen, which will allow you to select a different server. There, you’ll be asked to create a new character and start fresh.]
There aren’t many ways you can permanently be stuck with a character you don’t like in Once Human. However, there are instances where a mistake might cost you. For example, if you create your character on the wrong server. So, can you delete them and start over?
Bad news: you can’t delete your character.
If you’re reading this article, there’s a chance that it’s already too late. However, before getting further into this, I will clarify that you can’t delete your character right now. This information comes from the Starry Studios Once Human launch FAQ, which also clarifies that being able to have multiple characters will be added in August 2024, which isn’t far off.
Right now, you’re kind of out of luck. Even if you went to a different platform, if crossplay is set up, you’re still stuck with that character on the server you chose. One account, one character.
There is one possible solution, and that is to create a new account. Depending on what platform you’re playing on, that might be more trouble than it’s worth. However, if you’re playing on Steam, downloading it instead on Epic Games Store will allow you to log into a new account. It’s uncertain what this will mean when accounts are better unified. Right now, that seems to be the only possible way to fix it.
The alternative is to contact Starry Studios’ support to see if the character can be removed from the back end. How you do that is another matter. Maybe through Twitter? However, since the FAQ suggests that it’s a technical limitation, it’s not a certainty that anything can be done.
Can you change servers in Once Human?
Even if you can’t change your character, you might be wondering if you can instead just move them to a different server. The answer, disappointingly, is, once again, no. You cannot change servers.
This is likely going to be the more frustrating aspects of the current restrictions but, as I mentioned under the previous header, this is only until early August.
The aforementioned workaround is to create a new account on a different platform. If you’re on Steam, you could instead create an account on Epic Games Store and log in fresh.
If you log into what you think is the same server as a friend but can’t see them, the problem may be that you’re on the wrong world instance. In that case, you can switch to their world using a Teleportation Tower.
