We all believed Megumi Fushiguro would be fighting alongside Gojo and Yuji in their battle against Sukuna, the King of Curses. Little did we know that Megumi’s flesh and bones would be completely taken over by Sukuna before the final battle began. So, if you are still wondering if Megumi is dead or alive in Jujutsu Kaisen, we have the definitive answer for you.
Spoilers Warning: This post has heavy spoilers about Megumi’s current status in Jujutsu Kaisen. So, make sure to read the manga beforehand in order to avoid ruining your intended experience.
First, Megumi Loses His Body to Sukuna
If you remember the initial arcs or anime episodes, Sukuna had always expressed his interest in Megumi Fushiguro. Sukuna always knew the potential that Megumi held within and considered him the ultimate trump card, which is why he went to the extent of saving his life in the Shibuya Incident arc.
Towards the end of the Culling Game arc, Sukuna did something unexpected by coercing Megumi to consume his finger filled with his curse energy. In an unexpected turn of events, this resulted in Sukuna completely taking over Megumi’s body. Hence, Sukuna was able to switch bodies in the end and achieved what he wanted from the start of the series.
As Megumi became his new vessel, Sukuna performed an evil ritual called “The Bath” to exert full control over his body and also to put an end to Megumi’s indomitable spirit. As a result, Megumi Fushiguro was technically alive but was kept confined within his own body for a long time from then.
But, Megumi Regains Control Over His Body
Right after Sukuna seized control over Megumi’s body, he fought against Yorozu who had taken over his sister, Tsumiki Fushiguro’s body. As Sukuna killed Yorozu in their brawl, it resulted in the death of Megumi’s sister as well. The fact that his sister was killed using his body along with the bath ritual pushed Fushiguro to the deepest ends of despair. He eventually gave up and did not fight back to gain control over his body.
Fortunately, Itadori Yuji came to the rescue to help his best friend. In Yuji’s domain expansion, he was able to have a talk with Megumi after a long time. While Yuji couldn’t encourage Megumi who was in a severely desperate state, he expressed the importance of his best friend’s presence in his life.
Along with this, Itadori continued to pummel the barrier separating Megumi and Sukuna’s soul to weaken it with his Black Flash attack. Itadori’s words in their conversation before made Megumi stand back up and fight once again. With the barrier getting wrecked, Megumi was able to use his Ten Shadows Technique to create a shadow to create a puddle and lock Sukuna steadily in one place. Thereby, Megumi also assisted Yuji after Nobara to finish off Sukuna.
Sukuna is Dead; Megumi is Back from the Depths of Despair
Yuji delivered the final blow to finish the King of Curses and freed his friend from the soul-binding shackles of Sukuna. In the end, Megumi survived this tragedy by overcoming the hardships thrown at him and of course with the help of his friend. As Sukuna was finally defeated, Megumi regained control of his body, with Sukuna out of it, and was seen recovering well in the final chapters.
In a nutshell, Megumi Fushiguro not only gained back his body but is also fit as a fiddle in the series right now. Megumi fans, we have been patiently waiting for nearly one and a half years now, and we have finally won. With Megumi and Nobara back from the dead in good health, our beloved JJK trio has reunited.
