After four years and a lot of community skepticism, Minecraft developer Mojang has introduced the much-awaited bundles into the game. The newest Minecraft snapshots are testing the new bundles, including its controls and features. You might’ve not cared that much about bundles before, but let me change your mind. And let me show you how bundles are fundamentally changing Minecraft’s inventory system for the better.
How Are Bundles Changing Minecraft?
Bundles in Minecraft are quite a genius feature. They are designed to hold a variety of items but not many of them. Because of this, they are perfect for dealing with small stacks of items you randomly acquire in your world.
Furthermore, thanks to the change in its crafting recipe, which only requires one leather and string now, they are so quick and easy to make. You can carry as many of them as you want and keep your inventory tidy and organized.
If you think shulker boxes are still better because they can carry a lot of items, that’s fine, but let’s compare them to understand why each of these storage items is amazing in its own way. First of all, bundles were never really meant to deal with large stacks of items, but a great variety of them. They can include 64 different items in a stack size of one only. Shulker boxes on the other hand can hold full stacks of 27 unique items.
As you can see, these two inventory solutions actually go hand in hand, as they make up for each other’s flaws. Also, you are not working with stacks upon stacks of different item types in the early game anyway. That’s why shulker boxes are obtainable after you beat Minecraft.
At first, I was pretty indifferent about bundles, as they didn’t seem that special, required rabbit hide to craft, and also were kind of annoying because you could only take out the latest item you put into it. Though, thanks to the changes added recently, I think bundles are on the way to becoming one of the best new additions to Minecraft.
Having said that, not all features of the new bundle design are great. So, let’s go over some things I and a lot of other players would love to see changed in the near future.
What Can Minecraft Bundles Even Better?
The first flaw I would like to point out isn’t too bad, but it’s still important. The way you control and interact with the bundle has changed. So, the right-click is now replaced with a left-click for some actions and is kind of confusing to many. This is easily bypassed if players simply just get used to the new set of controls, but they definitely stand out from all other in-game mechanics.
The second and most important problem with the current bundle is the tooltip or submenu. I think the idea is fantastic and it’s cool to see a whole new system in the game. However, the fact you can only see 12 different items when the bundle can hold 64 is not great. There are plenty of suggestions people have for this issue.
Some claim the items can be smaller and somehow all 64 of them should fit on the submenu. Others say that perhaps the tooltip should have more tabs, which would display all items. Some players even say that bundles should go back to its initial design (NO), while others say that 12 visible items are fine.
My opinion is that 12 items visible at the time is okay, but I’d definitely like to see more. So, three rows of 6 items would mean 18 visible items at the time and it sounds pretty reasonable. The idea of different sections in the submenu also sounds tempting, but I think it would be both tricky to implement for mobile devices and also kind of strange to use. I would love the most to be able to see all 64 items on the tooltip, but this probably won’t look very presentable.
