It is not often gamers like me get to experience a creation as amazing as The Ghost of Tsushima. Despite being almost five years old, this Sucker Punch title has managed to remain the perfect combination between gripping storytelling, satisfying combat, and an open-world experience like no other. But what if you’ve finished it and are looking for more? Well, if you can’t wait for the upcoming Ghost of Yotei, there is hope. We decided to compile the absolute best games like The Ghost of Tsushima to ensure you get lost in an amazing world again. So with that, let’s begin.
1. Rise of the Ronin
Despite being considered almost a soulslike by some gamers, Rise of the Ronin in fact is an action-adventure RPG taking place in 19th-century Japan ruled by the Tokugawa Shogunate. The story revolves around a duo of Samurai only known as the Veiled Edge. After part of the pair is supposedly killed, the remaining sets out on a journey of revenge.
Rise of the Ronin is a fantastic open-world adventure that features deathly difficult combat. As such, winning your fights requires an intricate combination of unleashing deadly attacks and knowing when to dodge and even run. And while you’re free to explore this entire map with freedom, death in this game comes easy. So if you want one of the best games like The Ghost of Tsushima with a deadly twist, this one’s for you.
2. Black Myth Wukong
Another ARPG but deeply rooted in Chinese mythology, Black Myth Wukong sets you in the shoes of the Destined One based on the Sun Wukong; The Monkey King. Setting out on a journey across six different chapters, Black Myth Wukong perfectly intersperses deep lore, amazing visuals, and combat that reminds me of Dark Souls yet again.
However, things take a twist with the introduction of magical abilities and spells. And I’ll be honest, seeing our Destined One using the combination of abilities combined with combat does indeed look very mesmerizing. That is if you can get past the insane difficulty. Nonetheless, get Black Myth Wukong as one of the best The Ghost of Tsushima alternatives.
3. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
I’ll be the first one to admit it. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is the one game that made me scream in rage. However, I can’t deny the fact that the outstanding level design, the amazing art direction, and a story that makes you angry and weep at once were worth it.
Long touted to be one of the best games like The Ghost of Tsushima, Sekiro is a soulslike that puts you in the shoes of the Wolf. Tasked with getting his lord back and defeating everyone, Sekiro’s journey is amazing. However, along the way lie extremely brutal enemies that will kill you repeatedly until you master the game’s slow yet painful dance of death.
4. Nioh
While the above title is by FromSoftware, Nioh comes from the famed Team Ninja known for its extremely difficult titles. As such Nioh is a brutal action game and makes you a lone traveler in Japan. As before, you must fight your way through a medley of enemies to come out on top.
However, do be aware that you will once again need to die again and try again to finish Nioh’s journey. That’s because Nioh’s journey is fraught with enemies inspired by Japanese folklore. So while they look quite amazing, the difficulties they pose is frustrating enough. So if you want one of the best games like The Ghost of Tsushima that packs a punch, check out Nioh.
5. Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty
It seems that Team Ninja really loves dabbling in worlds like The Ghost of Tsushima. Fallen Dynasty is an ARPG set in a dark fantasy version of the Three Kingdoms world. The game is full of deadly enemies that players must fight using swordplay based on ancient Chinese martial arts.
The game featured different weapons and wizarding spells that you can master to fight your enemies. As they fight through a twisted version of the Later Han Dynasty, they will encounter various threats that they must survive. While not the highest on our list, Wo Long deserves a mention in the best games like The Ghost of Tsushima.
6. Red Dead Redemption 2
Even though Red Dead Redemption 2 has no connection to Japan, RDR 2 is on this list because of its captivating storyline that will have you sobbing towards the end. Red Dead Redemption 2 takes place in the Wild West and focuses on Arthur Morgan and Van Der Linde’s gang. Running from the biggest heist they’ve pulled, Arthur and the lot must hide out and keep moving to survive.
RDR 2 is by far one of the most expansive and detailed worlds you’ll ever visit. Featuring locations as vivid as The Ghost of Tsushima, you will spend hours upon hours visiting the 1899 United States and its lore. The cherry on the cake is the accurate yet satisfying gunplay and combat system. So if you want one of the best games like The Ghost of Tsushima that mirrors a deep story and variety, get RDR 2.
7. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Another entry to our list with no direct connection to Ghost of Tsushima, The Wild Hunt continues Geralt’s storyline. For those unaware, Geralt is a witcher, a monster hunter generally despised by the world but has his uses. Tasked with tracking down Ciri, the Child of Prophecy, Geralt must make his way across a worn-torn map to find her.
However, the allure of The Witcher lies in its deranged beauty and its beasts. The entire game is filled with a bestiary comprised of monsters and mutants that have been crafted with care. As with any RPG, you will require a mix of the right items and tactics to defeat your foes while making hard story choices along the way. While the game can be a bit too long for some, it’s just the right amount for us and definitely one of the best games like The Ghost of Tsushima.
8. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
While not everyone likes AC Valhalla due to its potentially repetitive nature, it serves to be a good alternative to The Ghost of Tsushima. Ditching the traditional Assassin trope, Valhalla turns its way to Vikings and focuses on Eivor, a warrior in 872 AD during the tribe’s journey into the British Isles.
Since Valhalla is an ARPG at its core, the game is full of customization including the ability to have a different gender and alter the character’s features. However, that also means the game has different items, loadouts a lot of side missions. One of the best parts about Valhalla is that enemies can adapt to the player which makes combat in this game all the more satisfying.
9. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
This one is for all the Force fans out there. Jedi The Fallen Order is a soulslike ARPG set five years after Revenge of the Sith. You’re Jedi Padawan, who is targeted by the Galactic Empire and must rebuild the Jedi Order. Interestingly enough, the game adopts a Metrodvania style where new areas unlock as you get skills and abilities.
Combat in Star Wars Jedi is fast-paced and quite intense. And while it doesn’t have a lot of gore and violence, you’ll have your share of fun with what I consider one of the best games like The Ghost of Tsushima.
10. God of War 2018
I end my list with God of War 2018, an action game of a franchise that has had my heart for as long as I can remember. God of War follows along the father sun journey of Kratos and Atreus. As the duo bid goodbye to Faye and try to take her ashes to the highest peak, they must prepare for the long road ahead.
Besides packing extremely amazing graphical fidelity, GOW 2018 has an engaging and deadly combat system. As the player goes through various levels and upgrades their Levithian Axe, they must guide the duo along on a journey that will only get harder as the game passes. However, given the game’s beauty and the right balance between combat and difficulty, it all becomes worth it.
And that ends our list of the best games like The God of War. So which one was your favorite? Let us know in the comments below.
