As all seasoned Budokai Tenkaichi players know, having your grab (or throw) game on point is a must when playing Dragon Ball Sparking Zero, as it will add a new layer to your gameplan while also allowing you to break through overly defensive opponents if the situation calls for it.

But how can you perform grabs? And if facing an opponent abusing the move, how can you break free of them? To help you raise your power level even further, here’s how to perform grabs as well as escape from them in Dragon Ball Sparking Zero, no matter your platform of choice.

How to grab and break grabs in Dragon Ball Sparking Zero

After getting close to a standing or laid-down opponent in Dragon Ball Sparking Zero, you can perform a grab/throw by pressing R1+◻/RB+X (if playing on Standard) or double pressing X/A (if on Classic). In the same fashion, you can counter your opponent’s throw by tapping guard (R1/RB on Standard and O/B on Classic) at the moment they begin the animation. After you counter the move, your opponent will be pushed back, thus allowing you to rush in or blast them to oblivion.

As you can guess, countering a throw can prove to be a challenge when in the heat of battle. Luckily, though, the largest portion of the game’s cast have similar if not identical grab animations, which makes practicing against it a pretty easy affair. You can practice breaking throws/grabs in Dragon Ball Sparking Zero by heading to the game’s Battle Training and then selecting Throw Evasion.

It’s also important to point out that depending on your matchup in Sparking Zero, a character’s standard grab will be replaced by a completely new one based on scenes from the source material. An example of that can be seen when grabbing Final Form Frieza with Goku (Mid), Perfect Cell with Super Saiyan 2 Teen Gohan, and Super Saiyan Rosé Goku Black with Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan Vegeta, the latter of which will prompt the Saiyan Prince to reenact one of Dragon Ball Super‘s coolest sequences.
