Google launched the Pixel Watch 3 yesterday and comes in a larger 45mm size. While the new smartwatch could be considered a marginal improvement over the Pixel Watch 2 with the addition of Ultra-wideband and slimmer bezels, Google has added a major new feature that sets the Pixel Watch 3 apart from all smartwatches. Here’s what the new feature is and why Apple should copy it ASAP.

Pixel Watch 3: Loss of Pulse Detection Feature

The new Pixel Watch 3 feature is called Loss of Pulse Detection. As the name suggests, it detects the lack of pulse and contacts emergency services and contacts. It’s a part of Google’s ever-expanding Safety features like Safety Checks, Emergency Sharing, Car Crash Detection, and Fall Detection.

As for why this is such a big deal and why Apple should copy it right now, Google explains that there are times when we might be alone with no one around us. Losing your pulse like in the event of a cardiac arrest with no one around could result in the person dying, and that’s where the Loss of Pulse Detection feature comes to the rescue.

Pixel Watch keeps monitoring your heart rate and if your pulse dies down, it will quickly pull up your emergency contacts or else emergency health services to let them know about the location of the patient so that they can quickly get help.

To make it accurate, Google claims the feature isn’t always only looking at your pulse but motion, and physiological data. This is tied to a bunch of algorithms that determine if a person has just lost their pulse.

Detecting Pulse

Apple already has a large battalion of similar health features that can and have saved lives before. Google clearly took inspiration and added features like Fall Detection and Safety Check to the Safety and Emergency suite.

It’s safe to say that smartwatches are not more than just fitness companions, but potential lifesavers. Thanks to the improving algorithms, they can be more than your notification and health devices. That said, Apple needs to copy this feature from the Pixel Watch 3 because it can potentially save lives.

Will Loss of Pulse Detection be Available for Pixel Watch 2?

For all Pixel Watch 2 owners, we’re not sure if the Loss of Pulse Detection feature will make its way to you. The introductory video states that it’s a Pixel Watch 3-only feature, hence we’d like to believe it’s Pixel Watch 3 exclusive. That said, there aren’t any changes to the sensor array of the Pixel Watch 3 from the Watch 2, hence the feature could arrive to the Watch 2 if Google wanted to.

What are your thoughts on the Loss of Pulse Detection Pixel Watch feature, and should Apple copy it? Let us know in the comments.
