Spoiler Warning: This post includes heavy spoilers for the Jujustu Kaisen manga.
As the Jujutsu Kaisen manga has finally ended on a happy note, fans can’t contain their emotions. After all, it was a six-year-long journey – be it the unforgettable characters, the chemistry between them, the hair-raising fight sequences, or the humorous banter, everything made Gege Akutami’s JJK a worthwhile experience. Given that, every good thing tends to end, it’s time for us to bid goodbye to Jujutsu Kaisen while helping you understand what happened in the end. So, here is an explainer for the ending of the Jujutsu Kaisen manga.
Sukuna Berates Megumi
In Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 268, Sukuna starts berating Megumi so that the sorcerer gives up and allows the King of Curses to live in his body forever. He asks Megumi how he can face the world and live a normal life after killing so many people. He also reminds him that Megumi’s hands are colored with his own sister’s death. However, Megumi isn’t someone who would give up so easily, so he still starts mocking the curse from inside.
Megumi then asks Sukuna the reason for his desperation. He mentions that if Yuji manages to pull Sukuna’s soul out of his body, the story of the curse will end. He continues that if the remaining 19 fingers of Sukuna disappear, one finger won’t be able to keep him alive.
After that, Megumi mocks Sukuna by saying, “I’m relieved to see that even you fear death.” Megumi then proudly mentions that he never intended to live for himself as he always wanted to live for others, and he will continue doing that.
After that, Yuji shows up out of nowhere and lands a heavy punch on Sukuna imbued with Black Flash. Sukuna somehow loses control over Megumi and frees him. Yuji then starts conversing with Sukuna’s remains, a goppy mess. The boy says that even though he and Sukuna were born with the burden of a curse, he is glad that his grandfather didn’t let him become a monster like Sukuna. He then asks Sukuna to take him as a vessel and try to live for others.
However, Sukuna’s ego doesn’t allow him to surrender, so he chooses death after asking Yuji not to underestimate him as he is a curse.
Yuji, Nobara, and Megumi Reunite
Following Sukuna’s defeat, Megumi wakes up with scars all over his face. He sees Nobara inside a box and Yuji trying to close the lid. When he asks Yuji what they are up to, the boy replies that they are planning a “Kugisaki’s alive” surprise.
This panel reminds me of the old times when we were just introduced to this goofy trio. Nobara tries to make her friends feel light now that Sukuna is gone. So, she says that as the girl everyone thought was dead is alive, so they should at least shed some tears of joy.
Gojo’s Goodbye to the Sorcerer Trio
While the trio sat together after the series of intense battles, Yuji revealed that Gojo had given Shoko letters for them. However, finding only two letters, with Nobara written on one and Megumi written on the other, Megumi says that there are only two. Yuji reveals to him that he spoke to Gojo directly before the sensei’s death, so he doesn’t have a letter from him.
Intrigued by the letters, Yuji asks what did Gojo write in the letters. Nobara says that he wrote the whereabouts of her mother while Megumi hides his face and laughs. When Nobara and Yuji ask him the reason for the unexpected laughter, Megumi shows them the letter that reads, “Sorry, Megumi, but your dad is a goner!! I wasted his ass!”
Nobara then starts heading towards the other surviving sorcerers. She asks Megumi and Yuji to join her. Megumi says he must apologize and show gratitude to each one of them as they fought Sukuna. However, Yuji explains they must meet the other sorcerers as Yuta needs to be protected.
Yuta Returns To His Original Body
In a room, we see Yuta, who has returned to his original body, and Maki shows anger by calling him a jerk. Yuji asks him how did he get back to his body. Yuta then reveals that it was Rika who helped him survive and return to his body.
He says that when he was in Gojo sensei’s body, Rika didn’t show up there, so he thought he lost connection with her. However, Rika was trying to keep his body intact so that he wouldn’t have to face any difficulties. He elaborates and adds when he thought he would die as Kenjaku’s cursed technique was burnt, Rika reconnected with him and helped him get back to life following the near-death experience.
Mei Mei Discovers the New Shadow Style Head
At the start of Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 269, the shopkeeper whom Mei Mei asked for the price of a candy bar turns out to be the New Shadow Style Head. At the end of the chapter, Mei Mei reveals that she wasn’t asking about the price of candy, but she wanted to ask about the price of their life.
The shopkeeper is shocked, so they ask her how she identified them. Mei Mei says that she learned about them from someone who knew everything. The older adult realized that it couldn’t be anyone other than Tengen.
Megumi Visits His Sister’s Grave
Megumi never really had time, or we can say the opportunity, to mourn Tsumiki’s death because he was possessed by Sukuna, who continuously made him do things that made him hate himself. Also, Tsumiki was taken over as a vessel by Yorozu, who wanted to teach Sukuna the meaning of love by defeating him in a one-on-one battle.
However, Yorozu/Tsumiki dies a brutal death in the conflict. So, now that Megumi is free from the clutches of Sukuna, he finally visits Tsumiki’s grave to bid her a final goodbye.
Takaba and Someone Like Geto Show Up
Geto was killed by his own best friend, Gojo, and Takaba was believed to be dead in the conflict with Kenjaku. When fans were busy rejoicing in the defeat of the villainous entity Sukuna, Gege surprised them by bringing back Takaba in JJK Chapter 270. Besides that, we got a glimpse of a character who has an appearance like Geto. Nothing was made clear about the character, but his personality and style pushed us to believe it was Geto.
The Main Trio Embarks on a New Mission
Megumi, Nobara, and Yuji meet a new girl who seems like a new target to them. However, Nobara reveals that she can’t sense any sort of cursed technique or a marking on her. She then proceeds to add that there is a high chance that the curse user is in close range, so they need to rush.
Kugisaki then turns back to the girl and asks her about the appearance of the person. However, the girl couldn’t answer her as she was asleep when she became the target of a skilled curse user. After analyzing the situation, the trio successfully catches the culprit; Yuji acts maturely in that situation and vows to help him as Gojo did for him.
Gojo Satoru Appears in Yuji’s Flashback
After succeeding in the mission, Yuji recalls the time when he asked Gojo if he could do switch training with him. Gojo tells him that he wants the boy to think big and move on with the ‘Gojo Satoru’ thing. He further says that he dreams of seeing his students grow even more massive than him as a sorcerer.
Gojo then explains that he expects any one of his students to surpass him and create a different skill set. Our protagonist couldn’t believe the words coming out of the mouth of someone who had been overconfident about himself. Gojo then says that he expects big things from Yuji. We expected some similar results from Akutami sensei, but he rushed the ending and didn’t even give Gojo the proper send-off he deserved.
Sukuna Meets Mahito in the Afterlife
Sukuna meets Mahito in the pathway where souls walk after leaving their respective bodies. Mahito gets shocked and says that he never expected to see Sukuna there. He then says that Sukuna lied all these years as it wasn’t fun but revenge that made him stay on Earth even after dying.
Mahito further elaborates and says that Sukuna wanted to take revenge on those who mocked his existence. Sukuna says that he lived the way he wanted, but then, after a minute, he says that he could have walked on a different path, but now he will choose that one in his next life.
Jujutsu Kaisen Ends on a Happy Note
Following the main villains’ death, every surviving sorcerer rejoiced. The leading trio gets to live a normal life again. Well, they started this whole journey together and were together in the end. If this is not a happy ending, what else is it?
Also, we get to see Sukuna’s finger in a wooden case. While some fans might think that the cycle might repeat, a few believe that peace has finally been achieved. That’s because if we recall the time when Yuji first saw Sukuna’s rotten finger, it was wrapped in a cloth and captured in a wooden box. Megumi also told Yuji that the cursed object in the box was extremely dangerous.
So, now that the last panel shows Sukuna’s finger kept in an open case without the cloth covering, it means it ain’t a cursed object now, and humans don’t have to be afraid of Sukuna. Even though this might be disappointing for some fans, the rollercoaster of emotions made the series a huge success.
