Jujutsu Kaisen: Sukuna Deserves A Standalone Prequel Series

Jujutsu Kaisen: 10 Times Sukuna Proved He Deserves To Be The King Of Curses

Spoiler Warning: This post includes heavy spoilers for the Jujustu Kaisen manga.

Jujutsu Kaisen has finally bid us goodbye after six long years, but the ending to the series doesn’t actually satisfy the fandom. Initially, the fight between Yuji and Sukuna disappointed global fans, and eventually, the last panel of the manga, which featured Sukuna’s finger only further dashed everyone’s hopes. It seems author Gege Akutami wanted the popular manga to end without giving proper clarity.

So, the fans know nothing regarding Sukuna’s comeback or a potential JJK Part 2 manga. Well, in that case, fans demand a prequel series that will at least help us learn more about Sukuna, the King of Curses and the main antagonist of the series.

While there’s no news regarding Jujutsu Kaisen Part 2, fans wish to see the series get a prequel that takes place in the Heian Era. JJK delved deeper into the backstories of several characters, but it did not shed any light on Sukuna’s previous life. So, basically, we know nothing about Sukuna, who was the most major part of the series.

We indeed know a few things about him, such as he killed his twin sibling inside the womb of his mother and that he was a strong sorcerer in his human life. However, that’s not a decent share of information about a gigantic character like him.

Jujutsu Kaisen revealed Yuta Okkotsu‘s background in Jujutsu Kaisen 0, and we also got to see Geto and Gojo’s backstories in Hidden Inventory Arc. So, in this regard, Jujutsu Kaisen disappointed the fandom by keeping Sukuna’s origin story a mystery.

We, at least, deserved to see Sukuna in his human form in the flashbacks like Muzan received a flashback in Demon Slayer. Now that the story of JJK has ended, fans have started demanding a prequel series from Gege Akutami.

In the end, Sukuna mentioned to Mahito that he could take a different path or the right path if he got to experience another life. It was indeed a big statement from Sukuna, but it wasn’t as impactful as it should have been. It would have hit us hard if we had seen what led Sukuna to become evil, or was there a good side to him?

For us, Sukuna was a pure evil entity who enjoyed chaos, and out of nowhere, he says that he could have done things differently. Well, that’s sort of anti-climactic. Sukuna’s nature, which was shown to us in the entirety of the manga, didn’t justify that statement at all.

Sukuna Mocks the Fandom At The End

Gege Akutami is the most unpredictable author I have ever encountered. He always used to do the exact opposite of what fans expected from Jujutsu Kaisen characters. For instance — when Nobara was injured in her confrontation with Mahito, the author kept her away until we started believing that she would never return. However, just when fans lost their hopes of seeing her back, Nobara emerged from the shadows out of nowhere.

Moreover, we believed that Gojo would return someday, but the mangaka rather chose to make the gifted sorcerer a puppet whom Yuta would use to jump on the battlefield to provide Yuji a backup.

The last panel featuring Sukuna’s middle finger clearly signifies that Gege wants the fandom to realize they expected too much from the author and the series. In the end, he decided to give the middle finger to fans who were expecting to see flashbacks of Sukuna in the Heian Era or Gojo returning to life.

In a way, I believe Gege was mocking the fandom through Sukuna. Now, our only hope is that we, at least, get to see a one-shot focusing on Sukuna’s backstory sometime in the future.
